Shoei J-Cruise 2 Helmet Street Bike Helmet Motorcycle Helmet

The newly evolved J-Cruise II creates a new kind of value for your riding experience. Arai gets so much attention for its racing helmets, but the Japanese company makes open-face helmets, too, like the Classic-V. Taking the lessons learned from its racing helmets, Arai has applied some of those techniques here. Arai calls it New Old School, with heritage styling combined with modern luxuries.

The fabric used on the interior surface is a hybrid between moisture-absorbent, quick-drying material and soft raised fabric. Moisture-absorbent and quick-drying material is used on areas that cover the cheeks and brow where sweat tends to stick; and soft raised fabric is used on the parts where the skin tends to rub against when the rider wears/removes the helmet. This offers greater snugness and optimum comfort when wearing the helmet. The bottom edge of the cheek pad uses leather-like material that is more durable than the previous model, with an added design pattern with attention to detail.

For noise, the SZ-R VAS is a jet helmet so it is noisy, with about 107 decibels, though this is 1 decibel louder than the Shoei J-Cruise II, this again shows that there is a reason why we call these jet helmets. On the other hand, pursuit of aerodynamics realized a smart shape. Combination of these 2 factors is a big characteristic of J-Cruise.A stable riding safety without shaking of a helmet contributes to safety, comfort and reduction of fatigue in a high speed range. The longer you ride in distance and time, the more you may experience these performances. An updated face shield (visor) mechanism (QRSA), along with a change of the window beading provides a better fit and better seal.

Ventilation system

For ventilation, this helmet did well with a 1-degree Celsius difference, so that’s another 4 stars. If we look at the visor, we see that it has a wide view and a lip at the bottom of the visor, preventing wind noise and wind turbulence. Also the visor is pinlock prepared, the pinlock is not included in the box, as well as being treated with a scratch-resistant coating. This brings the visor a bit lower so the sun is blocked more than before. The internal sun visor has been tested according to the DIN EN 1836 standards.

Safety

The Shoei J-Cruise II is a premium open-face helmet that offers an exceptional blend of comfort, style, and safety. It features an advanced aerodynamic shell, superior ventilation, and an integrated sun shield. Ideal for urban riders and tourers seeking top-notch quality and performance. It was a cold wintry day but we still found the J-Cruise 2 performed very well and it’s ventilation and EPS grooves already proved to be working well.

Pursuit of Aerodynamics which may Contribute to Reduction of Wind Noise

Four outer shell sizes are used – XS-SM, MD, LG, and XL-2XL, for perfect helmet range fitment and overall, a more compact piece. If you want to make sure you get the fit right on your J-Cruise 2, we recommend that you come to see us in Guildford. Here at Motolegends, we will always hold in stock the J-Cruise in all sizes, although not necessarily in all its colourways, although if ever we are out of stock of a design it can normally be obtained the next working day. All we would say is that there’s no point in spending a lot of money on a premium quality helmet like a Shoei if it fits poorly. A helmet that is too generous in its fit in either the cheeks or the forehead will move around and can block your vision. A generous helmet will be less quiet and will not do its job properly from a protection perspective.

It is not a trendy style of helmet, and helmets like these are not bought by fashionistas. It is, we would suggest, a helmet for those who fully recognise and acknowledge the risks they are taking by wearing an open-face helmet. We are talking about the kind of biker for whom a full-face helmet represents almost an attack on their sense of personal liberty. These riders are prepared to trade the inherently increased risk for the wind in your face feeling that a full-face helmet simply cannot provide. Of course, some who ride in open-face helmets simply have not contemplated the dangers involved in their headwear choice. It’s possible that some lack the imagination to recognise the potential consequences of an accident.

Being 2020, the S-Drak Carbon Skin is not only edgy, but it’s also Covid-responsible thanks to its removable mask. And there’s also a retractable sun visor that can receive an optional peak. Inside there’s a high-quality suede interior that feels luxurious against your skin. More comfort features include a moisture-wicking and odor-free interior with advanced SuperCool antibacterial fabric. For those who wear glasses, the grooved interior in the temple area lets you slide your shades into the helmet comfortably. The QuickSlide shield replacement system allows for quick, secure, and tool-less shield removal and installation, with an optically-correct face shield that offers 95% UV protection.

Overall, the J-Cruise II is indeed a quiet helmet, relative to its style and openness of course; design, build, and air management are obviously important aspects with Shoei. Vouching for the functionality and versatility of the three top intake pieces is easy; the approach works in spades to manage airflow, left, centre and right or all together. It is indeed over-engineered, but it works when facing cold, cool or warm temperatures – ‘hot’ isn’t on the radar screen, yet. However, the Shoei J-Cruise II helmet provided for this review, on the Pelouze scales, came in at 1600gr or 56.4oz (3.5lbs), virtually the same as the original model. Another observation is that there is no sticker outside or inside with a weight listing – information provided with many new helmets today, including those carrying ECE certification information.

The SZ-R VAS also comes from Arai with an advanced ventilation system, you’re getting three vents in the top of the helmet, inspired by the Arai RX7V’s ventilation system and this hot air will come outside and rear exhausts in the helmet. The top two exhausts can be opened and closed as well using two small switches. The visor features Arai's latest VAS design improving on previous mechanisms. The visor is pinlock prepared, but the insert needs to be purchased separately as well as the small sun shield face shield.

The IS-33 comes in two shell sizes with two EPS sizes and is secured to your head with double D-rings. First, for the shell, we don’t really have much of a difference other than some style and aerodynamic changes to help with wind noise. Other than this both helmet’s shells are made of fiberglass with Shoei’s Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM) to make the helmets lightweight and strong.

It’s a fiberglass open face helmet that comes with a bluetooth communicator pre-installed. OK it’s a reasonably basic bluetooth, but most owners find it’s fine. Shoei reckoned they’ve done a good deal of work on the aero of the helmet to reduce lift, drag and buffeting.
